Supported Programs
Who We Help
Funding and support are provided to these 29 agencies and programs in Northern Alberta as well as many other Canadian Registered Charities. Our geographic region stretches from the NWT border to Fox Creek and Grande Cache north along the BC border.  All United Way Member Agencies must meet stringent criteria to ensure that your gift is effectively and efficiently directed to priority needs identified in your community.
 
2013 Funded Community Partners
  • Big Brothers/Big Sisters Association of Grande Prairie and Area  Strives to enhance the healthy development of children, youth and their families through positive mentoring relationships. Believes every child should have the opportunity to reach his or her full potential, both as individuals and citizens –that by doing so, they will not only do well, they will also do good.
  • Camp Tamarack Association  Camp Tamarack is a wilderness camp facility  that provides educational and recreational programs that enhance the personal development of participants of all ages and abilities.
  • C.N.I.B. Serves anyone who is experiencing vision loss, through public education, counseling, and a variety of rehabilitation programs.
  • Canadian Paraplegic Association (Alberta)*  Provides community-based rehabilitation services in a variety of areas, including adjustment counseling, personal care, employment, education, leisure, fitness and well being, as well as public information and disability awareness.
  • Canadian Red Cross Society *  Provides emergency relief of personal loss, a medical equipment loan service & safety education. As well, coordinates monetary relief in cases of national / international disasters.
  • Catholic Family Services Society of Grande Prairie Provides counseling on a sliding fee scale, support groups, and family life education programs to individuals and families.  United Way funds professional counseling service.
  • Cool Aid Society  (North & South Locations) A drop-in centre providing recreation, education, self development, activites & referrals for youth. After school program (ages 6-12), Teen drop-in programs (ages 13-17), summer childern's programs (ages 6-12)
  • Disabled Transportation Society of Grande Prairie  Provides a transportation service to Seniors and individuals who, due to their physical limitations, cannot access another means of public transportation with ease and dignity.
  • Goodwill Industries  provides programs to those with disablities and barriers to employment
  • Grande Prairie & District Grief Support / Circle of Life   Provides children, adults, and families with education and support through their grief journeySummer bereavement camps (Camp Heal-A-Heart) for children who have experienced loss through death, divorce, seperation or fostering. 
  • Grande Prairie Schools Snack Program A program whose mission is to relieve child hunger, to improve behavior and academic performance, to provide nutrition education and to influence healthy lifestyle choices by providing a healthy snack.
  • Healing Arts Program Initiative  A program geared towards children and adults with special needs including physical disabilities & emotional issues.  By taking part in art activities, these individuals are able to develop new skill, build self esteem, express themselves through creativity & most important to experience joy.
  • HIV North Society * is an AIDS Service organization that serves all communities within the Peace Country Health Region. The five main areas of programming include prevention and education, community partnership development, public awareness, harm reduction and support.
  • IGNITE North Peace Youth Support Services provides opportunities for youth aged 12-18 to participate in a variety of activities ranging from drama and visual art to graphic design and guitar lessons. Adult mentors provide support and instruction to youth which allows the participants to freely express themselves and enhance self-esteem.
  • John Howard Society  Re-integration school for 13-16 yr olds at risk.  Addresses crime prevention risk factor through social development, education, treatment & supportive services.
  • KidSport provides support to children in order to remove financial barriers that prevent them from playing organized sport.
  • Meals on Wheels    A community service that delivers hot, nutritious meals to Grande Prairie's Seniors, disabled, convalescent, or those who lack the strength or motivation to prepare adequate meals for themselves.
  • Men at Risk   A program to increase awareness of warning signs of stress, depression and potential for suicidal behavior.
  • Odyssey House Provides emergency shelter to women and children in need.
  • P.A.C.E. * (Providing Assistance, Counseling and Education)  Provides play therapy, individual counseling and group therapy for those dealing with sexual abuse; Wilderness Therapy Program for 12 - 18 yr olds.
  • Parkinson Alberta / Multiple Schlerosis Society
  • Rotary House  provides shelter and support to the homeless and hard to house.
  • Seniors OutreachProvides outreach and referral services to help seniors maintain an independant lifestyle.
  • Sunrise House (Grande Prairie Youth Emergency Shelter) is a facility that provides a safe, temporary shelter to youth ages 12 - 17.  Referral agency to connect those youth to safe reselution of homelessness issues.
  • United Way Emergency Fund*  Provides funding for individuals who are temporarily in crisis or at risk of homelessness.  Assistance may be provided with food vouchers, rent supplements or goods and services.  Application to the United Way Emergency Fund should be made through the Community Social Developement at the City of Grande Prairie. 
  • YMCA  The Virtual Y program provides children the additional help needed to succeed in academic studies, incorporating physical activity;  team work, sportsmanship and problem solving.
